How to share pet care in a household without double feeding
Why does double feeding happen in shared homes?
Double feeding happens because the only record of “the cat has eaten” lives in one person’s head. One person feeds the cat at 7:00 and leaves for work. Another wakes at 7:30, sees a hungry looking cat (cats are very good at this) and feeds it again. Nobody did anything wrong. There was simply no place to look.
The same gap causes the opposite problem too: everyone assumes someone else gave the evening meds, and nobody did. Both problems have one cause and one fix. The household needs a single, shared answer to the question “has this been done today, and by whom?”
What does a shared pet care routine need?
A routine that survives a busy household needs three things: one place to look, a name next to every entry, and a clear owner for each job.
- One place to look. A whiteboard on the fridge works until someone is out of the house. A group chat works until the message scrolls away. A shared log on everyone’s phone is always in a pocket.
- A name next to every entry. “Fed at 7:02 by Anna” answers the question completely. “Fed” with no name or time invites a second guess.
- A clear owner for each job. Shared does not mean everyone does everything. It means everyone can see everything. Morning feed is Anna’s, the evening walk is Sam’s, and the log shows both.
How do you set up a shared log step by step?
Setting it up takes about ten minutes, and most of that is agreeing who does what.
- List the daily jobs. Write down every recurring task for each pet: meals, water, litter, walks, meds, brushing. Include the time each one is normally due.
- Give every job an owner. Put one name on each slot. Swap owners on weekends or school holidays if that suits your household, but always know whose turn it is.
- Set a reminder for each slot. Use the time the job is due. In Paw Crew, a reminder can repeat at set times each day, every few hours, weekly, monthly or every few days.
- Invite the household. In Paw Crew, household sharing is free and uses iCloud sharing: choose one pet or all of them, send an invite from Apple’s sharing screen through Messages, Mail, AirDrop or a link, and the people you invite see the pets and logs you share. Nobody creates an account with us.
- Agree on one rule: look, then log. Before anyone feeds, walks or gives meds, they open the log. Right after they finish, they log it. That one habit is what stops the double feed.
- Log from the notification. When a reminder arrives, tap Mark done. The log entry is written with your name and the time, and everyone else’s reminder stops being a question.
- Choose who hears what. Each person picks the household notifications they want, such as a quiet note when someone gives meds, and whether to get a nudge when a routine item is not logged yet.
How does Paw Crew show who already fed the pet?
Paw Crew shows each pet’s day as one ruled page, the Day Ledger. Every entry has its time on the left and a signature on the right, like “by Anna” or “by you”. A line at the current time, the Now line, divides what is done from what is still to come.
So when Sam opens the app at 7:30, the answer is on the first screen: “Fed, 7:02, by Anna”, above the Now line. No second breakfast. If a job is late, it moves to the top as carried over, with the lateness spelled out in words, so it is hard to miss and easy to fix.
What if someone forgets to log?
If someone forgets to log, the reminder keeps the job visible until somebody closes it. A due feed that nobody has logged stays on the ledger as still to come, and then as carried over if the time passes. In Paw Crew, a not logged yet nudge also goes to everyone in the household once the time and a short grace period have passed, and it clears for everyone as soon as one person logs it.
Two habits help:
- Log after the fact. If Anna fed the cat at 7:00 and remembers at 9:00, she can log it for 7:00. In Paw Crew, holding a quick-log button lets you log for an earlier time.
- Ask, do not guess. If the log is empty and the pet is asking, send one message before you feed. A missing log is a reason to check, not a reason to feed again.
How do you handle sitters, roommates and teenagers?
Treat everyone who cares for the pet the same way: invite them, show them the one rule, and let the log do the rest.
- A sitter for a week. Invite them before you leave and remove them when you return. They see the routine, the reminders and who to call. With Paw Crew Pro, invite them from Sitter handoff with a last day, so their access ends on its own, or hand over a printed sitter sheet if they do not use iCloud.
- Roommates. Agree on the owners for each job in writing. The log settles any “I thought you did it” without an argument.
- Teenagers. A named job with a reminder on their own phone works better than a parent’s reminder to remind them.
- Someone who should watch but not log. The owner can make a person view only, so they see every entry but cannot add or change one, not even with Siri, a widget or the Apple Watch.
You stay in control of what you share. You can remove someone or stop sharing at any time.
Frequently asked questions
Does everyone need an account to share pet care in Paw Crew?
No. Paw Crew has no accounts. Household sharing uses iCloud sharing, so each person uses the Apple Account already on their iPhone.
Can two people log the same feed by mistake?
They can if nobody looks first, which is why the routine starts with one rule: look, then log. Paw Crew shows each entry with the time and who logged it, and if a second feeding is logged within 30 minutes of the first it asks before keeping both, such as Biscuit was already fed by Anna at 6:02. Keep both?
Will a shared reminder go off on everyone’s phone?
Reminders in Paw Crew are local notifications on each iPhone, and each person decides which household notifications they want. Everything is off at first except meds, so the owner of a job gets the reminder and nobody else is woken up for it unless they ask to be. A not logged yet nudge goes to everyone, once, and clears as soon as someone logs the job.
Can I see who gave the medication?
Yes. Every log entry in Paw Crew stores who logged it and when, so a med given by anyone in the household shows their name and the time.
Is this advice about how much to feed my pet?
No. This guide is about sharing the routine, not about what or how much to feed. Paw Crew doesn’t provide veterinary advice. Always consult your vet.
