How to set up pet medication reminders that actually fire on iPhone
Why do pet medication reminders get missed?
Most missed reminders are not the app failing. They are the iPhone doing what it was told: a Focus that silences alerts, a notification summary that holds them until later, or notifications that were never allowed in the first place. A few are real app problems, such as a schedule that drifts when the clocks change or a reminder list that quietly runs out.
The fix is to check both sides once: your iPhone settings, and how the app schedules the reminder.
Which iPhone settings stop reminders from showing?
Four settings decide whether a reminder reaches you: notification permission, Time Sensitive notifications, Focus, and Scheduled Summary.
| Setting | Where to find it | What to set |
|---|---|---|
| Allow Notifications | Settings, Notifications, the app | On, with Lock Screen and Banners on |
| Time Sensitive Notifications | Settings, Notifications, the app | On |
| Focus | Settings, Focus, each Focus you use | Allow Time Sensitive notifications, or add the app to allowed apps |
| Scheduled Summary | Settings, Notifications, Scheduled Summary | Leave the app out of the summary |
Time Sensitive is the important one for meds. Apple designed it for alerts that matter right now, and it can break through a Focus that would otherwise hold a reminder back. Paw Crew sends medication reminders as Time Sensitive and other reminders at normal levels, so a med dose can get through while a water bowl reminder waits politely.
How do you set up a medication reminder step by step?
It takes about five minutes per medication, and the vet’s instructions are the only source for what goes in it.
- Read the label or the vet’s instructions. Note the medication name, how often it is given, and for how long. Do not guess or change a schedule yourself; ask your vet if anything is unclear.
- Create a med course. In Paw Crew, add the medication name, the schedule, the start date, and either an end date or the number of doses. The app counts the doses remaining for you.
- Pick the schedule that matches the instructions. Paw Crew supports set times each day, every few hours, every few days, weekly and monthly on a date.
- Allow notifications when asked. Paw Crew asks for permission when you create your first reminder, not before, so you know what you are agreeing to. If you said no earlier, the app shows a banner that opens Settings.
- Turn on Time Sensitive and check your Focus. Use the table above. Do this once and every med reminder benefits.
- Mark done from the notification. When the reminder arrives, tap Mark done. Paw Crew writes the log entry without opening the app, with the time and who gave it. Snooze for 15 minutes or an hour if you need to, or Skip if the dose is not being given.
What happens when the clocks change or you travel?
A good reminder keeps the time you meant, not the time a calendar happened to store. Paw Crew keeps reminders correct across daylight saving changes and time zone changes, so an 8:00 dose stays at 8:00 after the clocks move.
When you cross time zones, decide with your vet whether a dose should follow local time or stay on the original interval, then set the reminder to match. If your time zone changes, Paw Crew offers to adjust your reminders.
Why do some reminder apps stop after a few weeks?
An iPhone app can only keep 64 notifications waiting at once. An app that schedules months of reminders in one go hits that ceiling and the later ones silently never arrive.
Paw Crew schedules a rolling window of upcoming reminders and refills it whenever you open the app or iOS gives it background time. Two things keep that working: open the app now and then (logging a dose counts), and leave Background App Refresh on for it in Settings, General.
How do you know the dose was actually given?
You know because it is written down with a name and a time. A reminder that was dismissed is not proof of a dose; a log entry is.
In Paw Crew, every dose logged from the notification, a widget, Siri or the app appears on the pet’s Day Ledger with who gave it. In a shared household that answers “did anyone give the evening tablet?” without a phone call. The med course also shows how many doses remain and says Course complete at the end.
Frequently asked questions
Will a pet medication reminder go off if the app is closed?
Yes. Paw Crew uses local notifications, which iOS delivers on schedule whether the app is open, in the background or closed.
Does Low Power Mode stop reminders?
No. Low Power Mode limits background activity, but scheduled notifications are still delivered. Opening the app regularly keeps the rolling window of upcoming reminders topped up.
Can Paw Crew work out the dose for my pet?
No. Paw Crew does not calculate or suggest doses. You enter the medication name and schedule your vet gave you, and the app reminds you and keeps the record. Paw Crew doesn’t provide veterinary advice. Always consult your vet.
What should I do if I missed a dose?
Ask your vet or the pharmacist what to do, because the right answer depends on the medication. Then log what actually happened, so the record stays accurate.
Do reminders need an internet connection?
No. Reminders are scheduled on your iPhone and fire without a connection. iCloud only matters for syncing logs between devices and people.
